Kidney Transplantation Can Improve Quality of Life for ESRD Patients

Dr. Russell, MD, FCRP, will review the historical development of transplantation, how it works, and what the benefits are in terms of quality of life and longevity.

Hamilton, Canada (prHWY.com) November 3, 2011 - An upcoming talk on kidney transplantation by nephrology expert Dr. David Russell promises to be informative and encouraging.

Dr. Russell will examine the roles of both dialysis and transplantation in the management of patients who develop end-stage kidney failure (also known as end-stage renal disease or ESRD).

He will also discuss the need for lifelong anti-rejection drug therapy and its complications.

Lastly, he will outline some of the ethical issues involved in transplantation, how waiting lists work and how fairness is built into the system.

"I have clinical interests in both kidney transplantation and cardiac disease in patients with chronic kidney disease, as well as research interests in non-invasive cardiac testing for wait-listed transplant patients," Dr. Russell said.

Dr. Russell is Chief of Medicine with St. Joseph's Healthcare; Director, Renal Transplant Program; and Associate Professor at McMaster University, in the Nephrology Division, Department of Medicine.

Following the talk, a representative of the Trillium Gift of Life Network will be available to answer questions about organ donation.
