Understand the development of music
Playing by ear is arguably the most joyful and expressive ways of playing the guitar. In its purest form a person can play anything they hear in their head instantly on the guitar.

In 1990, Martin and his 24-year-old son, David, were hiking in L.A.'s Griffith Park when Martin, only 51, suffered a heart attack and died on the trail. The younger Haarlem, then a talent agent at International Creative Management, was thrust into the record business. Because his father was a seat-of-the-pants kind of executive, when Haarlem started he found sparse business documentation and a checking account balance that showed a $16,000 debt. His first move was to convince CMH's suppliers and distributors to stand by for six months while he got things organized. Next, he released the albums his father had been working on and began to absorb all he could about bluegrass music. He was lucky to have the veteran picker and producer Arthur Smith as an ally. Smith knew the music, the artists and the production process, having sired CMH recordings at his studio in Charlotte, North Carolina. Computerization followed quickly, replacing the senior Haarlem's handwritten and mental notes. The company rallied, and today, CMH product can be found at local descries everywhere, including Tower, Virgin, Where house, Sam Goody, Borders, Barnes & Noble, Wal-Mart, and Costco, as well as through the record clubs (BMG, Columbia), the e-tailors (Cano, Amazon)They also introduced a lot of brands, such as: Gibson Vintage,Gibson 137 Custom,There are a lot of it , the company's own website, and even in truck stops. It has spawned subsidiary labels Vitamin, Dwell (heavy metal), CMH Urban, and Bob (electronic), and its music has even turned up on movie soundtracks. CMH's current stock in trade is the tribute album. There are the Picking' On series, the Hats Off To series, and a looser series of Acoustic Tribute To, Country Tribute To and Bluegrass Tribute To albums. All told, there are about 75 tribute titles, with more coming out every month or so. Most are for artists by name, though a few are by concept, like Picking' On Christmas, Country Fried TV Tunes and Country Picks On Classic Rock. Some of the latest Picking' On releases include the Birds, Dobie Brothers, Cat Stevens, Stevie Ray Vaughan, a three-disc Grateful Dead set, and even Dave Matthews!
As long as the music, where they will become valuable, whenever playing by ear is very useful for a musician for several reasons. If you wish to learn a piece of music, then with this ability you can do so very quickly. A person who can play by ear can simply listen to the piece several times, and then play it - easy! If you wish to write your own music, then you can play whatever sounds are in your mind, rather than fumbling around the freeboard trusting to luck. If you are playing live, then you are far less likely to forget the next note or chord because you can hear in your head what you are supposed to play next, and simply play it as you hear it. A person who has the ability to play by ear can also improvise much easier, and can spontaneously jam with other musicians, since they are far better positioned to think on their feet.
These abilities are the hallmark of great guitarists. Not how many exotic scales or chords you know, but how you can play with your soul. Playing by ear definitely unlocks your soul and allows it to wander into your playing, making it special and unique - just like you! You can relax and allow your powerful and creative subconscious mind to take over the playing, rather than play consciously and robotically. How can you open up your soul if you don't know what sounds you are going to make until after you have made them?
Some people can play good solid improvised pieces without this ability. However if they don't know what sounds they are going to make until after they have made them, then they are relying on technical knowledge such as chords and scales, and some luck. There is little opportunity for opening up the soul this way.
