Delhi, India (prHWY.com) May 31, 2011 - Indian Army and the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) will now help in preserving snow leopard, an endangered species, whose population is vanishing rapidly. Environment ministry in concern of rapidly dwindling snow leopard population takes the decision as a conservation measure.

In a statement said by ministry, it was stated that, "there is need for more structured dialogue with the army and the ITBP to facilitate a deeper involvement of these bodies in conservation issues in the snow leopard landscapes".

The ministry believes that it is effective to have the defense forces as they have a large presence in all those areas where the snow leopards are found.
On March 11, the ministry held its second meeting chaired by the Environment Minister Jairam Ramesh. The meeting was kept regarding national steering committee for Project Snow Leopard (PSL).

To strengthen the conservation of wildlife destinations in India that is situated at high altitudes of country, a project was launched in 2009 along with local communities, civilian organizations, and scientists.

750 snow leopards are distributed in five states of the country, namely, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Uttarakhand, Sikkim and Arunachal Pradesh. The committee is reviewing the effects made by the individual state in the step of progress and is preparing appropriate management plans for the same.

The members of the committee include scientists and experts from the Nature Conservation Foundation, Wildlife Institute of India, World Wildlife Fund and Wildlife Trust of India, apart from senior officials from the five snow leopard states. The members discussed in the meeting the critical issues of the mechanism and suggested requirements for improved facilities, greater capacity building as well as providing 'difficult-area' incentives to field staff to improve on-ground monitoring and protection.

Moreover, an international conference will be held in India involving international expertise on conservation of snow leopards and mountain landscapes.
