Glassell Park, CA (prHWY.com) January 13, 2014 - Last week, fifth graders at St. Bernard Catholic School outperformed about 17,000 other schools in Mathletics, an interactive web-based mathematics program. According to the Mathletics Hall of Fame, the class placed 5th in the United States and 39th in the World, collecting a remarkable total of 60,953 points--one point for each math problem answered correctly. For the math buffs out there, that's a whopping 3,208 correct answers per student...in just one week!

"I am very proud of my students' efforts and achievements," says fifth grade teacher Laura Arceneaux, "They work very hard, and seeing their name listed among other schools around the world has provided them with even more motivation."

Mathletics is a web-based program by Australian company 3P Learning. It currently represents a global community of 4 million students who improve their mathematical problem-solving skills by regular, personalized exercise. The program is an adaptive platform that diagnoses individual students' strengths and weakness, and allows teachers and parents to monitor student progress. All problems are aligned to the Common Core Standards, and include basic facts, numbers and operations, fractions, geometry, measurement, and data.

"Mathletics is perfect for the 21st century classroom as it provides a solid curriculum with which to reach every student at every level," says principal Meg Samaniego, "More importantly, it's enjoyable for the children."

St. Bernard has been employing Mathletics in the classroom since 2011, when the school was chosen for the C3 computer pilot program. It is but one of the forward-thinking, tech-centric tools used by St. Bernard faculty and students, and according to junior high math teacher Bill Heinen, the results cannot be denied: "Student work at their own pace, with some of them learning two grade levels of curriculum in a single year. Combined with a comprehensive math vocabulary program," reports Heinen, "Mathletics has helped to boost math scores across grade levels.

Indeed, the fifth grade class's top-five placement is a mere representation of the very real progress St. Bernard has seen in both student engagement and academic performance since it began actively incorporating technology into the classroom. Don't believe it? Just try to get your child to do 3,000 math problems a week with a pencil and paper!
