Internal Benchmarking
This type of benchmarking is used when an organisation searches for best practice within its own boundaries.
Explorative Benchmarking
Explorative benchmarking is used to compare the performance of an organisation with other competitive and non-competitive organisations. This can be done both at organisational and functional level.
Comparative Benchmarking
Comparative benchmarking is used to compare the performance of an organisation, In either case, a set of appropriate measures is agreed, and current performance is measured. This is then compared with other organisations either by searching and analysing information in the public domain, or by requesting information from the organisation itself.
Best Practice Benchmarking
Best Practice Benchmarking is used to identify and learn from best practices in other organisations using similar processes but achieving superior performance. This requires firstly a thorough understanding of your current process and its performance, and secondly an ability to identify the enablers to outstanding performance in the benchmark process. These are then adapted with the benefit of your own process knowledge

The process follows these steps:

(iii) Process Description: How does our present process work?
(iv) Secondary Research: What is know/published about this opportunity area?
(v) Question Set Development and Testing: What should we ask, to get the richest most useful information?
(vi) Partner Company Identification: Who has a process that is best-in-class?
(vii) Partner Company Recruiting: Will the companies we need to talk with talk with us?
(vii) Primary Research: What is the data we'll collect from partner companies?
(viii) Data Collection and Management: How do we need to organize the data to manage it as it is collected?
(ix) Data Analysis and Display: How do we analyze and display the information to make it meaningful?
(ix) Opportunity Identification: What is the best possibility for improving the process being studied?
(x) Change Design and Implementation: How do we introduce the changes so that we get maximum benefit?
