CA, CA (prHWY.com) March 30, 2013 - California, Mar 30, 2013 - The most important thing about cutting steel is to know what you are dealing with. You will need different tools to cut different types of steel. For really thin sheets of stainless steel, you won't need anything fancier than a pair of tin snips. We will attempt to describe the cutting process for thin (25-15 gauge) and medium gauge stainless steel sheets. Read on to find out how to perform both.

A circular saw may prove to be the handiest tool of all time. With a variety of blades it can be used to cut almost any thickness of stainless steel. The saws can be fitted with blades designed to give you a clean metal cut. If the steel is too thick for the use of the circular saw you still need a laser or cutting torch.

Stainless Steel Cutting - When sheets of stainless steel are fabrication, the process is referred to as sheet metal fabrication. Since this has a high work hardening rate, but it is malleable and can be subjected to several different fabrication techniques. Some of the commonly used metal fabrication techniques on stainless steel include: cutting, shearing, bending, machining, welding and more.

Lay the sheet of stainless steel out on a sawhorse. You will want to ensure that the metal lays flat and stays flat. So lay a plywood sheet on it to hold it in place.Use a level to make sure the line is precise and straight. You need to use a marker even if it is erasable so you can make a visible line to guide your cut.

Make sure that it is aligned correctly or you might just cut through the table. Cutting metal is a lot simpler today than it was in the past. With technological advances we have taken a lot of the labor out of making cuts in everything from wood to stainless steel.

This would first need to be cut into appropriate shapes. These shapes are referred to as 'work pieces'. Conventional cutting techniques using plasma and water-jets are fast being replaced with laser cutting. Shearing and saw cutting are two other common techniques used to cut a work piece in the desired shape.
