Chula Vista, NY (prHWY.com) March 29, 2013 - The bone marrow transplant and peripheral stem cell transplant center of Mexico's leading hospital network has announced that it has started to treat people from outside of the country.

The Bone Marrow Transplant Unit of Bone Marrow Treatment Mexico, based in Hospital Angeles Tijuana, has been saving the lives of Mexican Nationals since 2000. Now it has developed facilities to accommodate more patients who require life-saving bone marrow transplantation for conditions such as bone marrow cancers, solid cancers and congenital bone marrow failure syndromes.

Bone marrow transplants and peripheral blood stem cell transplants are one of the hottest topics in the medical world today. They can offer the best chances of survival for a person whose blood production is impaired by cancers or inherited conditions, such as leukemia, tumors, aplastic anemia and sickle cell anemia. There is also possibility that bone marrow transplantation could be used in the future to treat HIV and AIDS.

Bone marrow transplants work by removing existing damaged or malfunctioning bone marrow through chemotherapy and replacing it with healthy bone marrow that can engraft in the bone and develop to produce new, healthy, infection and disease-free blood cells.

The Bone Marrow transplant Unit has access to thousands of bone marrow donors across the world and are members of the Be The Match registry and the National Marrow Donor Program. With an FDA approved in-house blood bank, the center also has the facility to harvest the patient's own cells for autologous bone marrow transplantation. This is a bone marrow transplant procedure where the patient's own stem cells are harvested and stored to be transplanted at a later date, for example, after intensive chemotherapy to treat solid tumors.

Dr.Ovilla, head of the Bone Marrow Transplant Unit and a specialist in hematology, oncology and immunology is excited by the broadening of the center's patient base. He says that the ethos of the transplant unit is that every patient has the right to effective treatment. Therefore it is part of the Unit's protocol to examine all possible stem cell and bone marrow transplant procedures available in order to determine the best one for the patient, according to their condition, age and general health. Dr.Ovilla says the ever-increasing list of potential donors for allogeneic bone marrow transplant means that the chances of finding a match are high, and increase every day as the donor registers expand.

With admissions 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, the capacity to treat 80 bone marrow transplant patients a year and off-site supported accommodation for recovering patients, it is thought that the Bone Marrow Transplant Unit will offer a choice of treatment to many patients who would otherwise be considered to be untreatable.
