Rhinoplasty for Men: a Plastic Surgery Procedure Gaining in Popularity
Although women still account for the vast majority of plastic surgery procedures currently performed in the United States, men are expressing a greater interest than ever before in surgery to achieve aesthetic improvement of body and facial features

Plastic surgery has become so popular with men that the industry has developed a number of procedures specifically for males whose features, size and skin and bone structure differ greatly from those of women and require somewhat different techniques. The most frequently requested and the one gaining currently in popularity is male rhinoplasty, or the male nose job.
Although rhinoplasty is a common procedure that has been performed for many years, it is by no means a simple one, and requires the skills and experience of a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon such as Dr. Michael Salzhauer; one who has had specialized training in cosmetic surgery and proven experience in achieving aesthetic results for both men and women.
"When once male rhinoplasty was the exception and most often to correct an obvious nasal defect, I am now receiving requests from younger men seeking to aesthetically improve their facial appearance.", says Dr. Salzhauer, whose Bal Harbour Plastic Surgery Associates in Miami FL in Miami FL is gaining a reputation for itself specializing in male rhinoplasty.
For both men and women, rhinoplasty can change the nose in many ways:
* Adjusting nose size in relation to the face
* Narrowing nose width at the bridge of the nose
* Altering size and position of the nostrils to create uniformity
* Straightening nose profile (evening bumps, humps or depressions on the bridge of the nose)
* Altering the angle and size of the tip of the nose
* Opening breathing passages or correcting a deviated septum
Aesthetically, men will more often be concerned in correcting crooked or previously broken noses from sports injuries or accidents, or in straightening the bridge of the nose, rather than in downsizing. Having a large nose may be undesirable to a woman but it may not necessarily be so to a man. In a male nose job the focus is more about the shape of the nose rather than the size.
Men and women will equally benefit from the increased confidence that an improved facial appearance can be achieved by rhinoplasty. Correcting defects can dramatically improve breathing and even sleep disorders.
There are two methods of rhinoplasty for men:
* Open rhinoplasty: the surgeon reshapes the nose through incisions made inside the nostrils, plus one small incision made across the strip of tissue that separates the nostrils.
* Closed rhinoplasty: the surgeon reshapes the nose through incisions made inside both nostrils, hiding any scars and allowing faster healing of the nose.
Both methods allow the surgeon to shape the cartilage and bone to achieve the desired appearance. The method chosen would depend on the extent of changes to be made, skin and bone characteristics and the patient's desired aesthetic goals.
In a typical patient consultation Dr. Salzhauer will explain the procedures and options available and discuss with him his medical history and what he wishes to achieve with rhinoplasty. The patient will also have an opportunity to view before and after photos of former patients and can use computer digital imaging to get an idea of how his own nose might appear after surgery. It is important to have realistic goals and to be committed to following the surgeon's instructions before and after surgery to obtain the best results and the fastest recovery time.
In preparation for male nose surgery the patient will be advised to stop smoking and drinking alcoholic beverages for a few weeks prior to surgery. If prescription medication or nutritional supplements are usually taken, the patient should consult with his regular physician about which medications can be temporarily discontinued until after full recovery from the rhinoplasty.
The patient should plan for a one to two week period of time away from regular activities to allow full healing. Swelling and bruising around the nose and eyes will quickly subside but it may take up to two months to see the final results of the new nose shape.
