Peter Van Os explains how kids crafts ideas help children get back to basics when it comes to playtime.

Peter Van Os has been sourcing cheap craft supplies for over 20 years so that families, schools and communities can encourage their kids to engage in creative play. And things were a lot simpler when he was growing up. "We didn't have a lot of money, so there were no video games or fancy toys - we used our imaginations and had a great time making something out of nothing."

Peter sees a lot of families come through his non-profit recycled art and craft outlet. He says parents love nothing more than to give their kids something constructive to do rather than just watching television or playing video games. "They come in here with their kids and they are amazed at all kids crafts ideas that can be used for their children to enjoy hours of fun learning while they play." The kids love it, too. It makes a nice change from the internet.

Of course, it's not just about supplying recycled art and craft material; Peter says most of us use things for a limited period and then we throw them away without so much as a second thought; so much so that many of us have far more possessions than we could ever use in one lifetime, and he believes this causes major ecological problems for all of us. So why not make learning and playtime accessible to everyone and help the environment at the same time?

Peter believes that by nature, children have amazing imaginations. Left to their own devices they learn best though creative play; he says it's amazing how far a box of bits and pieces can provide hours of educational entertainment. "Even after 20 years I am always thrilled to see how the kids and families' faces light up when they find new and interesting things to create."
