St. luis, OH (prHWY.com) March 24, 2013 - Consulting the dentist for fluoride treatment is very important during the pregnancy time. One of the benefits of a child having fluoride teeth from taking fluoride supplements in pregnancy and as an infant and child is that we know those teeth rarely have cavities so we do not have to take x- rays every six months. X-rays do have to be taken on all children to look for missing or extra teeth, to check a space for teeth, and for other purposes that are not related to "cavity-checking." The Cleveland Dentist or dental office should use high-speed film, a narrow beam (cone), a modern x-ray machine, and a lead apron over the lap when taking x-rays. When these precautions are taken then the amount of radiation involved with a dental film is extremely small, especially when compared with medical x-rays like chest films, etc. With proper technique, a dental x-ray uses the same amount of radiation that one receives by spending a day at 5,000 feet rather than at sea level. One day of skiing at 10,000 feet would be equal to three or four dental films. However, as there is no evidence that x-ray exposure is beneficial, only needed films should be taken. We prefer that the fee for an examination be the same, whether x-rays are taken or not, as we do not think it best for the dental office to have a financial incentive to over-x- radiate.

The teeth should be cleaned and polished as part of their care and as part of a complete examination as it is difficult to check for cavities if the teeth are dirty. The cleaning can be done with the exam or on a second visit a week or two later. If the dentist has been conscientious about prescribing fluoride supplements to build the mineral into the teeth as they develop, then it is proper that the dentist, once or twice a year, give a fluoride treatment for its additional temporary benefit. The child's head must be tilted down and suction used to prevent these highly concentrated gels from being swallowed.

When one leave the Cleveland Dentist office the parent or parents should have a clear understanding of what was done for their child on that visit, what the state of the teeth, gums and bite are, what fluoride supplement was prescribed, when the next appointment is and what is to be done next time. If all by the doctor told is, "we filled one tooth," or "no cavities, come back in 6 months," parent is not being recognized as an important part of his or her child's dental care.
