Elmhurst, IL (prHWY.com) March 7, 2013 - Elmhurst, IL, February 8, 2013 - Millions of people suffer from dental anxiety but Elmhurst Sedation Dentistry is now able to eliminate this problem through relaxation dentistry. A visit to the dentist for any reason causes stress and anxiety for many people. This actually keeps patients from seeking important dental care on a routine basis. But dentists have learned that there are easy and effective ways to deal with this anxiety.

"We know that the fear of dentistry or dental procedures is a very common problem affecting millions," explains Dr. Jerry Scharfenberg. "As a dental professional, I know that some patients suffering from dental anxiety simply put off important routine examinations. By avoiding these visits, patients only open themselves up to more complicated problems in the future. We are trying to put an end to that cycle through patient education and relaxation dentistry techniques."

Years of research have helped dentists understand the fears that plague many of their patients. This research, combined with advances in dental technology, has enabled dental professionals to establish comfortable and calming approaches to dental treatments and procedures. Sedation dentistry now offers many different options to help the patient undergo even the most complicated dental procedures with little or no memory of the sights and sounds of their visit.

Dr. Scharfenberg and his team at Elmhurst Sedation Dentistry work with the patient to understand their fears. A plan is then established to fit the patient's specific needs. One option is Nitrous oxide (laughing gas), which is administered through a mask and helps the patient feel calm and relaxed throughout treatment. The effects of nitrous oxide wear off quickly after the procedure is completed. Oral Conscious Sedation is the solution for patients with a very high level of anxiety. Medication is prescribed for the patient and is taken about an hour before their appointment to make them feel calm and drowsy. This allows the patient to go through the appointment without feeling any pain and with little or no memory of what happened.
