APEC: Protecting the rights of consumers in a thorough manner

Port Louis, Mauritius (prHWY.com) March 5, 2013 - Association for the Protection of the Environment and Consumers or APEC is an association of committed individuals who thought of providing the members a platform to discuss and find solutions to issues concerning consumer rights. The association was formed with the objective to defend, safeguard, and protect the rights of the members and struggle for sustainable consumption. Not just this, the association also ensures that the United Nations Guidelines on Consumer Protection be suitably implemented throughout Mauritius. This can help in protecting the interests of consumers and assist them enhance the quality of their life.

Mr. Suttyhudeo Tengur is the president of the association as well as that of the Government Hindi Teachers' Union and Vani Printing Cooperative Society Ltd. Since day one, APEC has been successful in meeting the goals and mission of consumers. Port Luis is the most populous city as well as a cultural, economic and political hub of Mauritius. One of the major contributors to the economy of the city is tourism but there are other industries as well that also add to the growth of the city. Some of these include finance, shipping and the manufacturing sector (including textiles, chemicals, plastics and pharmaceuticals). APEC is based in Port Louis and one of their main aims is to set up, promote, assist, sponsor and co-ordinate the activities in organisations by the way of healthy cooperation and affiliation with national and international bodies.

The consumer protection act in Mauritius creates provision for the control of trading practices and prices in Mauritius. Not just this, it also empowers the minister to manage prices of goods mentioned in the First Schedule. Be it the Fair Trading Act, The Legal Metrology Act, The competition Act, The Customs Act or for that matter The Value Added Tax Act, all the aforementioned acts have been developed so as to maintain a symbiotic relationship between the dealer and the consumer. Besides, it also ensures that the consumers get superb value for money on all their purchases.

In a similar fashion, the environment protection act Mauritius has been in effect since 5 September 2002 and this act makes it compulsory for people in the country to follow the rules and regulations. Under this act, an individual can be charged if any oil spill or other misadventure is found on his/her premises. In fact, authorities have the right to search the premise without any warrant. If the individual does not abide with any requirement, notice, order or direction issued under section 85 of this Act, than he or she can be booked under proper conviction act.
