Delray Recovery Center Releases Infographic on the Dangerous Effects of Nicotine
Florida's Delray Recovery Center is a treatment facility that offers programs for addictions to drug and alcohol, eating disorders and co-occurring disorders that include depression, anxiety and bipolar disorder.

The first fact of note is the number of youth that start smoking every day. The infographic puts that number at 1,000, or the size of an average high school. Half of those who smoke will die an estimated 13 years earlier than their peers. One out of every four high school student smokes, the infographic continues, and 80 percent will continue smoking into adulthood.
"Perhaps the most obvious way to avoid the dangers of nicotine is not to start smoking in the first place," said Delray Recovery Center Chief Operations Officer Doug Petri. "Hopefully our infographic will send the message that smoking and the use of nicotine is not worth the risks."
The infographic reports tobacco use contributes to 443,000 deaths every year. Tobacco kills 20 times more people than murder does, the infographic states, resulting in a death every 6.5 seconds. Cigarettes account for at least 30 percent of all cancer deaths, with a link to an increase in various cancers. These include cancer of the lungs, larynx, oral cavity, throat, esophagus, stomach, pancreas and several others.
"Not only do cigarettes harm people who smoke them, but more and more is being learned about the hazards of second-hand smoke. This is also addressed in our infographic," Petri said. "Perhaps the infographic will help smokers see they are endangering their own lives as well as the lives of their friends, family, children and loved ones."
Secondhand smoke affects an estimated 88 million non-smokers, including 54 percent of all children aged 3 to 11, according to the infographic. Secondhand smoke kills an estimated 50,000 people each year. Cigarette smoke contains more than 4,800 chemicals, including arsenic, butane, carbon monoxide and ammonia. Another chemical it contains is hydrogen cyanide, which is the same chemical that has been used in prison executions.
Located in Delray Beach, Florida, Delray Recovery Center offers individualized treatment programs for alcohol and drug addiction, eating disorders and co-occurring mental health issues. The center has long been providing a soothing environment while its certified staff design programs that are comfortable, safe and unique to the individual, elements that can ultimately lead to success and a sustained life of recovery.
