Pedal to the Medal: Great Britain Nabs Silver and Bronze Wins for Cycling Tournament
British cyclists have reason to celebrate as Team Great Britain pulled ahead of the competition to snag both third and second place slots at the 2013 Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) World Track Cycling Championships.
Britain is no exception to this high-endurance sport as the cycling team of Great Britain took home silver and bronze medals for their efforts. While they may have failed to repeat their first-place finish last year, members of Team Great Britain are still in good spirits for the results they managed to achieve at this year's WTC Championship. With the men's team comprised of Sam Harrison, Ed Clancy, Andy Tennant, and Steven Burke, the group hopes to continue their winning streak in preparation for the next Summer Olympics slated to be held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in 2016.
They trailed behind their counterparts from Australia, who managed to beat the Brits into second place by a margin of more than four seconds in the opening day of the UCI cycling tournament. Meanwhile, the female cyclists of the British cycling team-the duo of Vicky Williamson and Becky James-nabbed the bronze medal during the women's team sprint event. Majority of the cyclists on Team Great Britain are relative newcomers to the scene, and Dave Brailsford, the team's performance director, is considering them to be the nation's new hope in the field of cycling.
In the wake of big-name British cyclists who have bid farewell to the game (i.e. Sir Chris Hoy on indefinite hiatus and Victoria Pendleton who officially retired), the new names on Team Great Britain's roster definitely have large shoes to fill in order to meet or exceed expectations from cycling fanatics in their homeland. Rigorous training schedules and constant participation in major cycling events are necessary to build their hype in the cycling circuit and establish their reputation among veteran international cyclists. While the road to the upcoming Summer Olympics is still three years away, the new breed of British cyclists are eager to prove their worth and show that they have what it takes to push the pedal to get those coveted medals.
