William Jegen is the CEO of Power Energy Partners LP, a midstream energy marketing and logistics company headquartered in Glenview, Illinois. Though the majority of his business contacts are not on LinkedIn, William Jegen believes he may be able to effectively tap into a new market through the social media profile.

"I believe that LinkedIn is simply too important not to use," commented William Jegen. "In its early stage, it seemed to be a platform that was just for new college graduates and recruiters. Now, in 2013, however, it's definitely a different story. I've heard firsthand accounts from friends of mine with well-developed careers who have found the next steppingstone of their careers through LinkedIn. That's definitely not something I would have expected three or four years ago."

William Jegen certainly is not the only seasoned professional who is finding LinkedIn to be a valuable tool for networking. Studies in recent months have revealed that LinkedIn is becoming a far more effective and useful tool for business professionals than any other social media platform.

While many online self-marketing experts tout the benefits of Twitter, Facebook, and Google+, actual usage reports indicate that the average networking professional prefers LinkedIn for career transitional purposes.

"I'm still not sold on using Twitter or Google+," said William Jegen. "At least not for my purposes. But, I think I will experiment with LinkedIn throughout 2013, and see what kind of positive results it generates. At this point, I still haven't been there long, so it's hard to say. However, I'm committed to exploring this new medium over the next few months. That's the only way things happen in business - exploration."
