Myknowledgemap Patient Education Project Wins The UK Annual Bupa Foundation Award

An innovative website, developed by MyKnowledgeMap to improve the management and long-term health of young people with Type 1 diabetes, has been awarded the BUPA Foundation's 'Patients as Partners' Prize.

Micklegate, United Kingdom (prHWY.com) January 24, 2013 - York, UK, January 24, 2013 -- An innovative website, developed by MyKnowledgeMap to improve the management and long-term health of young people with Type 1 diabetes, has been awarded the BUPA Foundation's 'Patients as Partners' Prize.

The UpBete project was developed with a team from Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust and with input from the patients and their families themselves. The UpBete patient education support system that MyKnowledgeMap created with a team from Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust and with input from the patients and their families, provides information and educational resources as well as interactive support, and has helped to dispel fears and misconceptions about diabetes. In the UK, only around 14 per cent of children with Type 1 diabetes have good control of their condition, but in Leeds, this figure has been significantly improved by the introduction of Upbete.

The 'Patients as Partners' prize, funded by the BUPA Foundation, an independent charity that funds medical research into the prevention, relief and cure of sickness and ill health, is awarded for the development of shared decision-making tools that help patients to make informed decisions about their own health care.

UpBete provides mutual support and advice in promoting self-management of diabetes, community knowledge-sharing, learning and public outreach. Families can share recipes with other families and access online social tools. A blood glucose tracker tool engenders effective management from an early age with a motivating game-like aspect. The website was found to have contributed to a significant improvement in the percentage of children with good control over their diabetes, while the percentage with poor control more than halved.
