Dr Nozer Sheriar, Secretary General, FOGSI, "FOGSI and MOGS organized a press conference to highlight a burning platform issue related to women health and rights. Past, present and future issues are being tackled under this theme. She believes leadership is not about position - it is about action".

Key focus areas for AICOG 2013 and FOGSI

Maternal mortality:

Maternal mortality rate is a proxy indicator to reflect the functioning of the health system of a nation. The maternal mortality rate in India is approximately 250 per 100000 live births while in comparison, the Western world has maternal mortality rate in single digits. Maternal mortality is a burning issue that we face and though we are making some progress, there is a long way to go. A large part of the scientific program of the AICOG is dedicated towards making pregnancy safer. During 2012 FOGSI held a number of workshops for Maternal Mortality Reduction designed to train grass root level workers of the private and Government sector in good maternity care practices. Helping Mothers Survive is a FOGSI JHPIEGO fast track initiative being launched in 2013 to offer focused training and capacity building of frontline healthcare workers to manage postpartum hemorrhage and pregnancy induced hypertension. Various FOGSI projects such as the multiyear FOGSI Save the Mother Initiative, the FOGSI EmOC Certification course, the FOGSI SIDA Comprehensive Abortion Care project and the FOGSI FIGO Gates Maternal and Neonatal Health Initiative address reduction of maternal mortality, many in partnership with the government. As of date, the FOGSI EmOC certification course has trained 1200 doctors to provide emergency obstetric care.

Prenatal sex selection:

Prenatal sex selection by sex determination and sex selected abortion is the most extreme form of gender discrimination that has lead to a drastic fall in the ratio of females to males in our country. While FOGSI supports the governmental action on various fronts to check these practices, there have been some serious difficulties that FOGSI members have faced during these operations. FOGSI has done its best to represent the difficulties and ease these burdens and has been proactive in this regard. A number of societies have formed DOSST (Doctors Opposing Sex Selective Termination) Cells. This is a form of voluntary self vigilance and surveillance that doctors have adopted with the purpose of mobilizing opinion against prenatal sex determination. The DOSST cell also guides doctors on the correct practices to keep their records and comply with the law and Government regulations.
