What Is a Proxy Site?
In a nutshell, a proxy site is an online web service that allows the user to access websites that are blocked by a content filter of some type by hiding the users IP address, or simply allows the user to hide their original IP address for whatever re

Webster's dictionary defines proxy as "the agency, function, or office of a deputy who acts as a substitute for another." So, proxy sites are websites that substitute their IP addresses, or identification for the users.
An IP address, or Internet Protocol address, is an individual identifier for a computer that is connected to the internet. Filters and firewalls basically work as screens to filter out content or specific websites from having access to an individual computer or network.
Some basic security programs for computers, like parental controls, use content filters or website filters. Firewalls are also used to prevent access into or out from an IP address as an added measure of protection.
It is possible for a user to need or want to bypass these security measures for some reason. A proxy site provides a quick and easy solution.
As previously stated, proxy sites stand in proxy for the originating IP address.
For instance, you go to the proxy site address. From there you type in the web address that has been blocked. The 'web' recognizes the proxy site's address as the originating IP address and allows me access to the previously blocked website. As long as you don't leave that website, anything that you do from there will look as if it came from the proxy IP address.
Web proxies, or proxy sites, are portable proxies, allowing you to change you IP address from any computer that has access to the internet. You use them like a search engine, except you must enter a web address instead of a keyword search.
You may need to use a proxy site in order to access a site that you business may have blocked because of one or two key search words. Often times, businesses will set up their firewalls or filters to not only block websites, but websites that contain certain words or groups of words. In the course of your normal business practice, you may find that you need to access one of these sites.
Other legitimate reasons to use a proxy site would be as security specialists. A security specialist may use a proxy to attempt to infiltrate a company's servers to test their security protocols. Since the target server may not recognize the proxy server's origin, allowing the specialist to find any holes in the target's firewall or filters.
So, a proxy site can offer users the freedom to surf anonymously and to bypass certain security protocols to even gain access to sites that may be otherwise unavailable. Many of these sites are free and quite easy to use. If you find that you frequently have need of proxy sites, you might also want to sign up to receive updates from one of them, which will allow you to receive new sites on a regular basis
