Vancouver, Canada (prHWY.com) January 15, 2013 - Botox is very popular today because of its role in plastic surgery. It is highly in-demand among adults, particularly women, who wish to preserve their youthful, wrinkle-free looks. It works really well at evening out heavily lined skin. It is even used for contouring the face to a desired shape. Botox relaxes the muscles and "collapses" them, so if it is injected along the jaw line and under the cheeks, it would make one's face appear narrower.

It's no wonder then that many women are availing of Botox treatments. Everyone knows what it is for and what it can do. The question is do they also know what should be done for skin care right after the procedure?

If you are slated for a Botox treatment to erase your wrinkles or contour your face, take note of the things that you should and should not do in order to achieve the desired treatment results.

First and foremost you are not allowed to lie down or bend at least three to four hours after the treatment so that the Botox will be allowed to settle in the area where it is meant to stay. Lying down may spread the substance away from where it's supposed to be. Avoid strenuous activity such or yoga as well.

On a similar note, ask the administrating doctor or skin care expert if minimal facial movement is acceptable, or if you should totally eliminate any movement in your face. There are those who recommend practicing natural facial movements like smiling, frowning, moving your eyebrows and so forth so that your face won't end up looking completely frozen and devoid of emotion. Remember this very important rule though: you should not massage the injected area for at least 12 hours, or else it will change the desired contour of your face.

There will be a two-week rest period after the Botox is administered. During this time the injected area will feel swollen and maybe even painful. You can use ice packs or a towel dampened with cold water to ease the swelling and pain. Remember not to push too hard because again, massaging is not allowed. Considering the limitations and delicateness of the skin and muscles at this point, don't do any scrubbing or microdermabrasion during recovery time. Mild soap and water six hours after the procedure will do.

It is also important to drink lots of water to keep your body and skin hydrated because this can help speed up your recovery. Smoking and drinking alcohol is discouraged. Also keep your skin protected from the sun by applying moisturizer and sunscreen, and putting on a wide-brimmed hat. If it's not absolutely necessary for you to leave the house, stay indoors and away from sunlight.

You should know that the immediate period after the Botox injection is an excellent time for the skin to produce natural collagen. Consult with your trusted skin centre about the possibility of applying products that will promote collagen production. Retinol, vitamin C and glycolic acid, for instance, can help eliminate wrinkles.
