New York, NY (prHWY.com) January 15, 2013 - New York NY, 16th December 2012 - the last 12 months which come to a close in just under 2 weeks have proved very defining for salvia. The Mexican psychoactive supplement has been in the domain of many young people in the United States yet it was until 2012 that salvia divinorum came on the spotlight with the Miley Cyrus video smoking salvia epitomizing what has been a growth in the public highlight of the plant. All the same, the year has also been characterized by numerous challenges.

The popularity of saliva divinorum in the last 12 months has surged remarkably with Google reporting an increased of "salvia" searches by 600 percent which is unprecedented in decades. Although the growing concerns over the hallucinogenic nature of the Mexican psychoactive plant has been met with strong calls for its illegalization, the use of the plant has remained controlled in many states. A report by the national institute for drug abuse quoted in the New York times reported a decline of salvia use in the US by 5.5% SINCE 2009 and according to Dr. Mathew Johnson, a professor at the university of Michigan who was also involved in the study, the problem of salvia was not as big as legislators and law makers were trying to portray it.

Illegalization of salvia divinorum will have significant negative effects, a fact that was well underscored in the last 12 months in light of growing research and discovery on some of the clinical use of the plant. Researchers have been keen to warn that banning salvia will stifle the medical opportunities that the plant has been associated with. Reports emerging in 2012 from scientific research on the components of salvia divinorum showed that a complex component in the pant called salvinorin A could provide insightful knowledge and solutions in the treatment of chronic pain, addiction to cocaine and the treatment and control of the Alzheimer disease.

Research on the therapeutic benefits of salvia has intensified in the last 12 months. Research from the University of John Hopkins also reported that preliminary analysis of the components of the plant showed that it was non addictive and lacks any neurotoxicity attributes. Whilst the strong call for the illegalization of salvia divinorum has been based on very poor understanding of the plant, it seems that 2012 has provided huge reason why a second thought in the use and regulation of salvia should be taken.

Leading salvia stores in California and other states have also seen increased sales in the last few years with the customer base cross cutting across youth groups and relatively aged citizens in the United States. The idea that salvia is retrogressive to the American youth population looks in many ways founded on literally nothing yet even so, 2012 will go down as a year that has given many states and legislators in the different states setting up regulatory and illegalizing laws for salvia some food for thought.
