Australia Strengthens Data Privacy Laws
Australia is working towards strengthening its privacy laws for both public sector and private companies based in the country. The Privacy Amendment (Enhancing Privacy Protection) Bill 2012 was passed by the Federal Parliament on 29th November 2012
The current dual system of Information Privacy Principles and National Privacy Principles applicable to the public sector and private businesses respectively, will be replaced with the new unified Australian Privacy Principles (APPs).
Companies will be required to maintain an active privacy policy and also make sure it is complied-with on an ongoing basis.
Businesses may be required to disclose personal information of overseas recipients in certain cases, where business commits breach of the APPs by the recipient residing aboard.
There may be severe implications for online data sharing. For more information about Australia's privacy laws and its implications or doing business in Australia please call or email us.
