West Conshohocken, PA (prHWY.com) January 7, 2013 - Having cancer often means having to suffer through chemotherapy treatments. It is just a fact, a necessary evil. Sometimes the side effects of the chemo treatment are worse than the side effects of the cancer. That is especially true where the skin is concerned. Chemotherapy can really dry out skin, often to the point of terrible itching and inflammation. It can also cause rashes, cracking, splitting, and peeling. It is a good idea to take preventative steps to lessen the severity and possibility of developing theses skin afflictions, as cancer patients already have enough on their plate.

Chemo skin care should start about a week prior to the beginning of treatment. If you start applying creams, balms, and ointments before your chemotherapy, you skin will be more hydrated and better able to resist drying out. You should put it on at bed time and after you shower. It is a really good idea to put some moisturizer on after you wash your hands, too. If you keep up this routine while undergoing your chemotherapy treatments, you may be able to avoid the unpleasant, and often irritating, skin symptoms that may arise.

Even though you moisturize regularly, dryness and other skin problems may develop and persist. Irritations and dryness can be unavoidable because of the type of cancer you have, your particular mix of chemo drugs, or just plainly the way your body reacts to all of these factors. Sometimes a chemo rash will occur on certain areas of the body. You should be extra attentive to these areas, apply serums and balms to try and prevent any splitting and blistering. As they say, the less pain, the better.

In conclusion, hydrate and moisturize your skin as much as you can, before and during your chemotherapy. Doing so will reduce your chances of developing mild to severe skin irritations and rashes.
