UK Ancestry Visas If you are a Commonwealth Citizen and you are able to show that one of your Grandparents was born in the UK you may apply for a Visa that will allow you to stay here for a Period of up to 5 years

Applicants must be aged 17 years and over. They must currently be Commonwealth citizens, and they must have a grandparent who was born in the United Kingdom, Channel Islands or the Isle of Man. Applications from candidates with a grandparent who was born in the Republic of Ireland before March 1922 will also be valid.

Applications will be considered based on the British birth of any one of your four grandparents, alive or deceased. In the case of adoption, you can still use your biological grandparents towards eligibility, but must have proof of adoption and relation.

If you or your grand-parents who you are claiming ancestry through are/were adopted you can still apply under this category as long as you can show legal evidence of the adoption when making the application.

Your husband, wife, civil partner or eligible partner and children under 18 years of age can also join you in the UK as your dependant on this visa.

If you are applying from outside the UK you must obtain permission to enter (also known as 'entry clearance') on the basis of your UK ancestry before you travel here.

If you have already entered the UK in a different immigration category, you cannot switch into the UK ancestry category. We will only give you permission to stay in the country on the basis of UK ancestry if:
You entered the UK holding entry clearance based on your UK ancestry; or we have already given you permission to stay based on your UK ancestry.
