UK Labour Calls to Adopt US 'Small Business Saturday' to Encourage Economy Boost
Britain is considering adopting the "Small Business Saturday" being done in the United States to support UK's independent small retailers. This course of action is encouraged by the shadow Labour Secretary, Chuka Umunna.

According to Umunna, local retailers must be celebrated and supported because they can help boost the economy. This American Express-initiative has seen a great success, providing a simple and effective way to celebrate local small businesses. It also helps encourage more people to support such enterprises by shopping in local stores, especially during the busiest shopping days of the year.
"A Small Business Saturday in the UK is something all local authorities, whatever their political persuasion, could support and promote," he adds.
The shadow business secretary believes that small entrepreneurs are the lifeblood of the economy and have huge contributions in the communities. He also believes that they add a unique character of every locality they represent. The said idea is now being considered by the Department for Communities and Local Government.
The local Growth Minister Mark Prisk had said that they are determined to offer support to the High Streets and had doubled the amount of small business' rate relief to new and smaller shops. The local government agency has also provided over £80m of start-up loans for budding start-up entrepreneurs.
Mr. Umunna has already written to American Express and has asked the company if they can help implement the same activity in the United Kingdom.
President Barack Obama himself is among the best supporters of the "Small Business Saturday" in the United States. He was seen shopping at a small local book shop with his two daughters, Sasha and Malia.
