Sydney, Australia (prHWY.com) January 3, 2013 - If you're looking for a quick fix for staff motivation you'll be hard pressed for a better model than Maslow's famous hierarchy of needs. The theory, first presented in a 1943 paper explores a series of motivating factors that can be used as motivation for your staff.

The first, most basic of need in Maslow's theory is the Physiological needs of every human, which includes breathing, food, water, sleep, homeostasis and excretion. While at first look you may believe these needs are met by your organisation, many companies use these physiological needs to create staff motivation and improve employee retention.

For example in many industries where employees are highly sought after, it's the first basic physiological needs that are addressed or made easier to improve staff motivation. Take Silicon Valley for example, which is notorious for providing elaborate catering services, well-thought out offices that maximise comfortability and even in many cases napping rooms to rejuvenate tired employees all in the name of staff motivation.

All of these employee perks also serve as extra staff motivation, allowing employees' physiological needs to be exceeded past the norm and resulting in an added boost to staff motivation.

How can you bring Maslow's ideas into your organisation on a budget to improve staff motivation?

- Ask your employees if there's anything you can do to make them more comfortable in their working environments

- Provide ready access to food and refreshments for employees. Vending machines make a great substitute if you're on a budget

- Allow employees to take more regular breaks
