According to a recent survey conducted by Edit Optimisation businesses should be spending most of their marketing budgets on internet marketing rather than traditional marketing options.

"The Importance of online marketing cannot be overestimated. In many ways it is eclipsing television and radio". E-Shot
The survey participants consisting of consultants, analysts, marketing companies, and digital agencies, decided 76% of the average marketing budget should be spent on web based marketing. They suggested spending a meager 17% of the budget on traditional advertising methods.
"Online marketing gives you far more bang for your buck". James Lovett, Core Technical Solutions
On average they decided to afford 67% of their budget to internet activities and only 33% on traditional media streams. Interestingly a significant number of respondents ignored traditional media altogether due to it's high cost, high risk nature.
When asked how to spend a budget of £100,000 the respondents on average spent £17,000 on pay per click, £11,600 on online PR, £9,900 on search engine optimisation, and £9,800 on social media. The remaining money was split between £7,000 on print ads, and £6,500 on television advertising.
"The key with marketing in today's climate is to be as flexible as possible". Mary Doyle, DQ Global
One of the more interesting suggestions that the respondents shared was to consider keeping a reserve fund in case of unexpected marketing opportunities. The cost of not spending all of your budget immediately was thought to be outweighed by the value of unpredictable opportunities. Building a reserve fund into your marketing budget from day one can lead to taking advantage of very effective short term opportunities.

IPA Bellweather predict that 23% of companies will cut their marketing budgets in 2013, while only 18% intend to increase spending. With austerity still a watchword for the economy marketing efficiency is more important than ever before. Online marketing offers much better efficiency for cost, and returns much richer feedback to businesses than many traditional media streams can, and importantly for much less. As the internet becomes more and more important to the day to day lives of the global population, effective online marketing becomes more and more important to businesses wishing to connect to their customers.
