Yamaha and Honda graphics to remember Isle of Man TT Race

The International Race Isle of Man Tourist Trophy (TT) was a motorcycle racing event hosted by the Isle of Man and represented, for more than two decades, the most prestigious race of the kind in the world.

London, United Kingdom (prHWY.com) January 2, 2013 - The International Race Isle of Man Tourist Trophy (TT) was a motorcycle racing event hosted by the Isle of Man and represented, for more than two decades, the most prestigious race of the kind in the world. It was part of the Motorcycle Grand Prix World Championship organized by FIM, starting with 1949 and ending with 1976. For safety reasons, it was then moved to the United Kingdom under the name of British Grand Prix. Honda and Yamaha dominated the last 16 years of the Isle of Man TT race and their fans still remember the Honda graphics and Yamaha graphics that made the two brands absolutely unmistakable.


The Tourist Trophy races from the Isle of Man became a part of the Tourist Trophy Formula 1 Championship between 1977 and 1990, in order to keep the racing status of the event. From 1989, the racing under the authority of the Department of Tourism of the Isle of Man became the Isle of Man Tourist Trophy Festival.


The format of the race is that of a time-trial on public roads which are closed by the decision of the parliament of the Isle of Man, called the Act of Tynwald. The first race, under the name of the International Auto-Cycle Tourist Trophy, was held in 1907, on May 28. This first event was organized by the Auto-Cycle Club and involved 10 laps of the road-legal touring bikes St John's Short Course. The motorcycles were equipped with saddles, pedals, exhaust silencers and mud-guards. The overall winner of this first event, in the single-cylinder class, was Charlie Collier with a Matchless motorcycle. His time to complete the race was 4h 8m 8s and the average speed was 38.21 mph. The twin-cylinder class had a winner in Rem Fowler who was riding a Peugeot with a Norton engine, but his time was 4h 21m 52s, with an average speed of 36.21 mph. The trophy for this first race was s stylized version of Olympic God Hermes, made by Giovanni Da Bologna and represented a silver figurine riding a winged wheel. It was presented to the winner Charlie Collier by the Marquis de Mouzilly St. Mars, who donated the trophy. The same trophy is now awarded annually to the Isle of Man Senior Tourist Trophy Motor-Cycle Race winner.


Between 1961 and 1976, Honda graphics were seen winning 18 titles in the 50 cc, 125 cc, 250 cc, 350 cc, and 500 cc, while Yamaha graphics were seen winning 21 titles in the same classes.


In 2007, the Isle of Man Centenary was held to celebrate the 1907 first event. A vintage parade included 100 classic motorcycles, to remind the Short Course. Many of the competitors of the Isle of Man previous races were present at this celebration.
