London, United Kingdom (prHWY.com) January 2, 2013 - The motorcycle race called the North West 200 is held in Northern Ireland each May. It is a street circuit on public roads that run between the towns of Coleraine, Portrush and Portstewart, which form the Triangle and make one of the fastest circuits in the world. The speeds frequently exceed 320 km/h (200 mph). In 2012, the maximum speed has reached 335 km/h (208 mph) in a practice session. The island hosts about fifteen vents that are run on public roads from April to October. The circuit attracts more than 150,000 visitors coming each year from many places of the world. Japanese motorcycle manufacturers dominate the races, Suzuki and Kawasaki being only two of them. Each year, motorcycle fans may see parading Suzuki graphics and Kawasaki graphics.


The initial event was originally intended to take place in the North West part of Ireland and was organized by the City of Derry and District Motor Club. It moved to the north coast but its name did not change. Starting with 1964, the race has been organized under the authority of the Coleraine and District Motor Club.


The original format of the event was covering two hundred miles and was a handicap race, but changed to several separate races, covering 4-6 laps each. The race is scheduled for Sunday, with practice sessions on Tuesday and Thursday. Both practice sessions and races are held on closed roads and all riders compete in a normal circuit racing, different from the time-trial format of the Isle of Man races.

The number and classes of races have changed over the years, according to different regulations. Between 1990 and 2010, a 125 cc race was always present and a superbike race was introduced in 1992. All races are held over a number of six laps, with the exception of the new Supertwin event. The street circuit is on public roads, but also includes three speed reducing chicanes. The circuit is run anti-clockwise and passes near many private houses. In order to ensure track safety, street signs are eliminated on certain parts of the track, while bales of hay are put to wrap the base of telegraph poles and lampposts. The length of the circuit is 14.436 km (8.970 mi), with a first lap covering the distance of 14.217 km (8.834 mi) for each race. Initially, the start/finish line was near Magherabouy, but it moved in 1930 to the Portmore Road of Portstewart.

Japanese manufacturers have clearly dominated the North West 200 competitions, with 200 wins out of a total of 325 races. Honda and Yamaha are the two best performers, but Suzuki, with 32 wins, is fourth, while Kawasaki, with 9 wins, is sixth. The fans of Japanese motorcycles had enjoyed over 40 times seeing Suzuki graphics or Kawasaki graphics on the first palce.
